Compact Vertical Machining Centre

Makino developed the Slim5n with 30% more working area in a machine that is only 200 mm wider than its predecessor. The depth and height remain unchanged. The Slim5n continues to offer the same high degree of flexibility as the Slim3n, featuring an 8,000 rpm spindle for high-torque applications and a standard 16,000 rpm spindle, both equipped with an HSK-A50 interface to maximise process reliability and rigidity.

Technical Specifications

The Slim5n employs a fixed-table design, providing customers with greater flexibility for fixture design to meet the demands of a larger work envelope, higher fixture weight, and straightforward interfacing that enables a wide range of machining applications. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was used to optimise structural rigidity and torsional stiffness for maximum performance and consistent results. The machine’s structural configuration is based on a closed-frame design with a pair of long supporting columns that deliver superior rigidity.

Makino is recognised globally for its leadership in spindle technology. Spindle rigidity, high speed, constant pre-load, multi-plane balancing, minimal vibration, and reduced thermal growth are key areas in which Makino has excelled through innovative design and manufacturing. The Slim5n is available with two spindle specifications, 16,000 rpm and 8,000 rpm, to address the diverse machining requirements of the high-volume production machinery sector.

The standard 26-tool ATC magazine provides smooth and rapid indexing to support high-speed machining applications. Designed with an armless, direct tool-pick mechanism for enhanced performance, it also incorporates an integral door design, eliminating the need for separate actuators and increasing overall reliability.

Developed for production environments, the Slim5n’s coolant system is designed to enhance productivity. Featuring both nozzle and flush coolant as standard, the system efficiently removes chips from the cutting zone. The Slim5n structure includes a sloped design for faster chip evacuation. A Lift-Up Chip Conveyor can be integrated at the rear of the machine to accommodate applications with high chip-generation demands.

The Slim5n can be configured with various types of rotary tables such as a 4+1 rotary table, single-spindle, or twin-spindle options to meet the needs of different customers.
