The Makino U6 H.E.A.T. Extreme Wire Electrical Discharge Machine (Wire EDM) is the fastest in the industry. Its innovative EDM technology uses a 0.016” (0.400 mm) coated wire to achieve the fastest feed rates possible—twice as fast as traditional 0.010” brass wire. The U6 can also be equipped with wire sizes down to 0.004” (0.100 mm) for the most precise cuts.

Built on the popular Makino platform, the U6 stands out from other EDM machines by lowering manufacturing costs while boosting productivity. The combination of new EDM technology and new high-gauge EDM wire increases cutting speed without increasing wire consumption.

Technical Specifications

Heightened engineering focus has been applied to the U6 H.E.A.T. Extreme design to improve precision, minimise cost, maximise speed, and simplify machine maintenance.


Improve precision
  • Compared to other EDM machines, U6 H.E.A.T. Extreme technology is able to produce finer surface finishes down to 4 µin Ra (0.1 µm Ra) using the optional Crystal Machining fine-finish circuit.
  • Makino’s HyperCut technology uses precision-based settings that produce high accuracy and very fine surface finishes. Settings are developed for 0.008” / 0.010” / 0.012” (0.20, 0.25, 0.30 mm) wires, producing a 16 µin Ra (0.4 µm Ra) surface finish with three-pass machining (one rough cut and two skim cuts).
  • Tool-less Energiser Indexing quickly indexes power contacts without tools or special measuring devices, saving time and ensuring every index is optimally used.
  • Makino’s active Pro-Tech Circuit protects the workpiece by preventing rust or oxidation during long hours of operation, preserving the integrity of the entire component.

Minimise cost
  • The Makino Machine Condition Settings Database reduces wire consumption. Compared to other EDM machines, U6 H.E.A.T. Extreme technology significantly lowers long-term operational costs, improving efficiency and profit margins by minimising wire usage. The settings database is designed for low wire consumption. Makino engineers have created E-settings for all wire diameters and material types, optimised for speed, accuracy, and surface finish while minimising consumed wire.
  • The downtime cost and expense of a wire chopper are eliminated. The Makino pinch-roller system cleans and dries the wire before it passes through the rear pinch rollers. This prevents wire slippage, allows the used wire to lay flat in the collection bin, and significantly extends the life of the rollers and bearings, as they are not exposed to water or abrasive debris.

Maximise speed
  • The U6 H.E.A.T. Extreme EDM machine is capable of producing the highest machining speeds using 0.016” (0.4 mm) wire, while maintaining the ability to operate with 0.004” (0.1 mm) wire.
  • Achieve the world’s fastest machining speeds in good and poor-flush applications. The machine comes standard with a large (x4) filtration system and two independent CNC-controlled, high-capacity flush pumps that provide double the flushing horsepower for fast and reliable productivity.

Machine maintenance and operator ease
  • Wire guide removal and installation do not require calibration. The wire guides can be removed for cleaning and reinstalled without time-consuming vertical alignment calibration.
  • The eco-friendly Filter Air Purge Function automatically purges the main filters. The system uses air to remove excess pre-conditioned water and weight from the filters before replacement. It improves operator safety by preventing water spillage and slip hazards and drastically reduces filter weight prior to replacement.
  • Integrated filter pressure and conductivity monitoring eliminates the need for manual checks. The Hyper-i control digitally monitors filtration pressure and water conductivity and prompts the operator when consumables require replacement.
  • Compared to other EDM machines, the U6 H.E.A.T. Extreme features a space-saving design that integrates the dielectric reservoir into the base casting to improve thermal stability while minimising footprint. The pneumatic raise-and-fall front door allows excellent access to the workpiece and the lower head, even with large parts on the hardened stainless-steel table. The automated tank door has a mid-height function and includes safety features that prevent door lowering when water is in the tank.
  • Makino’s Hyper-i control provides an intuitive touch interface. Pinch, swipe and drag operations resemble smartphone and tablet use and follow a straightforward three-step process of Programme / Setup / Run. Digital manuals, training videos, and the advanced E-Tech Doctor support functions provide operators with integrated on-hand resources.
  • The machine includes the HyperConnect IoT connectivity package for remote machine monitoring and allows networked PC software, including CAD/CAM, to run directly at the machine.
  • Athena voice-command operation is available with the Hyper-i control. The Athena system provides machine voice control that assists operators and enhances execution of common tasks.
